ABOUT MOCMV

As large numbers of immigrants came to Australia and more specifically Victoria, in search of a better life, a desire to connect to their cultural and religious roots grew throughout the community. This ultimately gave rise to the Macedonian Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria.

OUR STORY

The Macedonian Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria (MOCMV): was officially established in 1956 as an unincorporated association to provide for the needs and demands of the large number of immigrants that were arriving in Australia after the end of the second world war and the Greek civil war from all parts of Macedonia but predominantly from Aegean Macedonia (the part of Macedonia under Greek rule) with amongst others the following aims and objects:

  1. to provide services and activities that would satisfy the needs of its members and the wider Macedonian Community that were of a secular nature and that reflected their Social, cultural, sporting and/or political outlook.

  2. to encourage and assist its members and persons of ethnic Macedonian heritage to integrate with the Australian Community while encouraging the maintenance of Macedonian culture.

  3. to incorporate a self-governing Macedonia Community as a legal not for profit entity that would establish a Macedonian Orthodox Church in Australia with autocephalous status and preserve and enhance its secular aims and objects (referred to in (i) above), subject/conditional only to the laws of Australia and democratic principles of self-governance.
